BINIGYANG diin ng Department of Education (DepEd) na kailangang i-develop ang literacy skills ng mga mag-aaral, sa kindergarten pa lang, upang matugunan ang nakaaalarmang kalagayan ng functional illiteracy sa mga batang Pilipino.
Sinabi ni DepEd Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Teaching Jerome Buenviaje, na tugon ito sa resulta ng 2024 Functional Literacy, Education and Mass Media Survey (FLEMMS), kung saan nabunyag na mahigit 18 million na junior and highschool graduates ang itinuturing na “functionally illiterate.”

Matatandaang 2023 nang ilunsad ng DepEd ang revised K-10 curriculum ng K-12 program.
